Eco-Friendly Clothing and Accessory Businesses in Ohio

(While this article is kind of Ohio-centric, you can use the information here as a guideline to help find eco-friendly clothing and accessories almost anywhere or as these companies have websites, their products are widely available.)

Three eco-friendly clothing companies are listed in Ohio's green living directory, though only one actually manufactures organic clothing in Ohio.

Buying locally manufactured eco-friendly clothing and accessories can give Ohio residents two important feel-good things. With mass factory closings and the exodus of lucrative employment, buying Ohio-made products keeps at least a few jobs in the state. That means less people on public assistance as well as more income taxes being paid into the state's coffers.

Less fuel is used for transportation, if the items are Ohio-made; potentially giving you a second feel-good thing about buying locally manufactured products. Less fuel is wasted and less greenhouse gas is released when transportation distance is shortened. If you combine the benefits of buying locally made products with an eco-friendly company, you get a true win-win situation for the state's economy, for local workers, and for the environment.

Ec-Ohio, Ohio's green-living, eco-friendly business directory directs Ohio consumers interested in reducing their environmental footprints to three organic clothing companies. Only one of the three actually manufactures garments in Ohio, but all three bring a message of sustainability.

Three Eco-Friendly Ohio Clothing Companies
  1. Esperanza Threads of Bedford, Ohio is a manufacturer of organic cotton clothing and eco-goods. Using pesticide-free organic cotton is part of Esperanza Threads' commitment to sustainability. Providing sewing training and green-collar jobs are also part of the company's mission. Green collar jobs are described as jobs that let people develop lucrative careers while also increasing sustainability and protecting the environment.
  2. Natural Baby of North Canton, Ohio does not make the natural, organic products such as baby and toddler clothing carried on the store's website. The company also sells organic-based items, such as shampoo, BPA-free baby bottles, and toys. With a mission to keep chemicals, toxins, and pollutants out of the items they sell, extra care goes into product sourcing, testing and selection. While not bringing jobs to the community or saving fuel by reducing transportation, the company is supporting Ohio residents by bringing sales tax dollars in; from selling organic, eco-friendly garments and products.
  3. Similar to Natural Baby, I'm Organic of Wickliffe, Ohio sells all organic products. The company uses its products to spread awareness of organic living through both products and projects. Products include 100% organic apparel and promotional items for businesses. Projects sponsored by I'm Organic include the trademarked "The Organic Family Album" and the "Organi-Giveaway" where winners of organic prizes are drawn on a weekly basis.
Green purchases and behaviors can have positive environmental consequences, even when it is not possible to practice 100% green living. Checking out the organic clothing sold by these three eco-friendly Ohio businesses can be a place to start.
